The city of Nagaur lies midway between Jodhpur and Bikaner in the state of Rajasthan. Due to the aforementioned cities taking prominence in the tourist routes, Nagaur often gets overlooked. Nagaur is built around the massive 12th-century fort, ‘Ahhichatragarh’. The fort has undergone a two-decade, Unesco award-winning restoration program under the auspices of Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Museum Trust. Within the fort is the Ranvas Hotel; there can be few places in the world where one stays in one’s own, virtually private fort. Walking around the ramparts is a great vantage point to gaze upon the busy city life outside the walls. Naguar has a large Muslim population, and just outside the fort but within the walls of the old city are several mosques, including the Tarkin-ki-Dargah, commissioned by the Mughal emperor Akbar for a disciple of the Sufi saint Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti. Its minarets can be seen from the fort’s ramparts.
