Madurai is located in the southern part of India in the state of Tamil Nadu, the town has an adbundance of temples. Madurai is constructed in the form of a lotus and therefore the city is often referred to as the lotus city. All aspects of this lotus city magnetize a large number of visitors each year, especially during the festivals. Among all the popular festivals, the two week long Chithirai Festival is considered to be one of the biggest celebrations in the city. The Pongal festival is celebrated in the month of January is commonly known as the Harvest Festival. The three-day festival is conducted to thank the Sun, the nature and the cattle for providing the farmers a good quality of harvest.
