Have you seen the movie ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’? Kitugala may not be known to many, however if you have seen the film “Bridge on the River Kwai”, you might recognise the location as it was filmed on the Kelani River near Kitugala. 

Kitugala is now known as adventure capital of Sri Lanka. It is a hub for those who are looking for adrenaline filled activities such as white water rafting and mountain biking, kayaking and abseiling.

January through to March is the dry period which makes it the most suitable time to go. Kitulgala records the highest rainfall in Sri Lanka during the monsoons. For those looking for gentle excursions there is jungle trekking and excellent birdwatching oppurtunities in the woods.

What’s in the name?: The name of Kitugala is derived form the Kitul Palm tree (Sago Palm tree) which is found in abundance in the Kitugala. The palm syrup extracted from these trees are a necessary ingredient in preparing various Sinhalese sweets.
