Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra is located on the banks of the River Yamuna. Agra boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the awe inspiring Taj Mahal. The Mahal, commissioned in 1632 by the ruler Shah Jahan for the remains of his wife Mumtaz, took 17 years to complete. The labourers and artisans who toiled on the Taj set up homes around the monument creating the area known today as Taj Ganj. Watching the sunrise or the sunset over the Taj Mahal is a spellbinding experience. We recommend watching both the sunrise and sunset over the Taj to appreciate the full grandeur of this vista. The magnificent Fort and the Itmad-ud-Daula also command a visit. And there’s also fun in walking around the bustling bazaars of this sprawling city.
