Amritsar is a holy city and synonymous with the spectacular Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. A visit to fabled Golden temple reveals one of India’s most serene and humbling sights. The imposing dome of pure gold gleams in sunshine with reflection in the surrounding sacred pool, it is a striking sight. The temple stands in the heart of the old town, a fascinating area to explore on foot with a network of bazaars that seem to float between the century. Gleaming malls and upmarket hotels can be found on the other side of the city often referred to as the ‘modern’ Amritsar. Whilst there, there is also an oppurtunity to witness ‘the daily closure of the border’ ceremony at Wagha border, the Indo-Pakistan frontier, 29kms from Amritsar.
