Pondicherry is beautiful hangover from its French colonial past. Also known as Puducherry, this place lies sunsoaked on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in Tamil Nadu state. The French East India Company established this town as their headquarters in 1674. Five trading posts were established along the South Indian coast between 1668 and 1674. The town was separated by a canal into the French Quarter and the Indian Quarter. The older part of this former French colony is full of quiet, clean, shady cobbled streets, lined with bougainvillea-draped colonial-era townhouses numbered in an almost logical manner. The newer side of town is typically South Indian. The sun kissed beaches invite you for a romantic getaway or to take a river cruise or camp on the seaside. Some of the charming places of interest in Pondicherry include Basilica of the sacred heart of Jesus, Jawahar Toy Museum, Arikamedu, Bharathidasan Museum and Botanical Garden.
