Unique secluded camps in jungles of India

Author:Rakhi

The excitement of being in the jungle at sunrise, literally seeing and hearing it awaken, not to mention the hope of possibly spying the elusive Bengal Tiger, is almost palpable. Then the romance of sunset and the peace that reigns as the jungle settles down for the night, is a magical contrast. And there is more, when you are not out game viewing relax by a pool, go exploring local villages on foot or by cycle, visit local forts and enjoy great banter around a camp fire. You are guaranteed to come home with lasting memories of your tiger safari holiday.

India’s four diverse parks  – Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Pench – each offer different topography, flora and fauna and boast exceptional places to stay which are small enough to be taken over in their entirety. Here are our favourite small idyllic lodges and camps in India’s wildlife reserves. All the camps have superb naturalists, vehicles and facilities; and put the environment and welfare of the flora and fauna first.

Sujan Sherbagh

Sujan Sher Bagh, Ranthambore National Park

Sujan Sher Bagh is one of India’s most exquisite tented camps, close to the gates of Ranthambore National Park.  A member of Relais & Chateaux, the tents are divine and want for nothing.   With its organic veggie patch and farm it is virtually self sufficient whilst a stunning pool, airy tented dining and relaxing tents offer every modern day comfort.  Chatting and drink around the camp fire here is truly special.

Samode Safari Lodge

Samode Safari Lodge, Bandhavgarh

This lodge is Bandhavgarh’s finest jungle lodge, a member of Relais & Chateaux, which sits in a peaceful wilderness area, away from the chaos of other lodges. The main’treehouse-like’ lodge has glorious large dining and sitting rooms, and outdoor wooden terraces looking over the grasslands.   Outrageously comfortable, huge cottages are linked by walkways which fan out from the pretty pool. Shergarh

Sher Garh, Kanha National Park

This is a dreamy, intimate, family run tented camp in a secluded area near the gate to Kanha National Park.    The cosy main house opens out onto a terrace and various paths lead through the grassland to a lovely lake and romantic dining areas.  The tents are beautifully authentic with everything one could wish for, and seem to blend seemlessly into their woodland setting.  A hugely welcoming place.

Jamtara Wilderness Camp

Jamtara Wilderness, Pench National Park

Another divine tented camp at the most peaceful gate to Pench National Park.  Spacious, natural tents offer comfort and privacy, being tucked away in woodland.  Wander through swaying grassland to the fabulous bar, pool and main lodge, before enjoying a sundowner under the magnificent Banyan tree.  You ca also sleep out under the stars in a beautifully set up ‘star bed’.  Rustic comfort at its best.
